An artist's book created on the occasion of the 2002 exhibition 'Forbidden Images' at the ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany. Each b&w reproduction is under a layer of "scratch-off" coating material (visible only if removed from the surface of each page), and printed on heavy-stock paper. 5 bound-in translucent sheets of Pergamin art paper, each with an embossed 'spider-web design,' separate each of the pages. - From Boltanski's statement for the exhibition: "The images covering the walls of a room will only be revealed by the will of the viewer." From the publisher: "In this book of forbidden images, the responsibility for viewing photographs many would not want to see is left entirely up to the reader. A silver surface has been printed over each of the graphic, disturbing pictures reproduced herein, covering them up in their entirety--only upon scratching the surface off can the images beneath be revealed." /Antiq.
