Text jap. - Incl. numerous illustrations from the rich Japanese photo history, starting with the few daguerreotyes taken in the country. A large selections deals with Japanese customs as depicted by foreign and later local 19th century photographers depicting local customs and landscapes for the foreign trade in pictorial photographs. The books also contains some caricatures and woodcuts dealing with the colonial ambitions of Western powers and Russia towards Asian countries at the end of the 19th century and beyond.
