Text engl. - Reconstructing the life and works of Richard Tepe, photographer of nature and wildlife in The Netherlands. Richard Tepe (1864-1952) was among the first in Holland to stress the importance of environmental protection. He started out just before the new century and was one of the first to specialize in many genres of nature photography. He was a major figure in Dutch photography, only to sink into oblivion after his death. Christiane Kuhlmann puts a fresh perspective on this important photographer by reconstructing his life and works.

Text engl. - In the 19th century photography recorded the non-western cultures. In 1883 a colonial exhibition was organised in Amsterdam, devoted to indigenous peoples and their crops, produce and trades. In this fascinating book Laetitia Dujardin explains the backgrounds of this exhibition (and similar exhibitions in Belgium), the views on and attitudes towards non-western cultures and the role of photography in colonial politics.

Text engl. - On December 5th 1901, Louis Heldring presented each of his three children with a special edition of his recently published book "Travel impressions of the East". These books had blank pages where he had pasted the photographs that he took on his travels in the Middle East in 1898, with handwritten captions. Originally a modest travel memoir, the three special gift editions grew into splendid two volume jewels of early amateur photography. The combination of text and photographs enables Rakia Faber to reconstruct the way in which an amateur photographer experienced and expressed his trip.

Text engl. - On interior views of a Dutch bourgois home taken from a collection of 262 autochrome glass plate transparencies taken between 1909 and 1932. The author analyzes the interior achitecture and furniture design, especially in relation to the autochrome’s colors.

Text engl. - On a collection of portraits of the controversial Dutch author Gerard Reve. He used photography as means of promoting himself as well as transporting more or less mysterious allgeoric contents when he was portrayed.
