Text engl. Incl. bibliography. - „In den 80er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts begann Peter Henry Emerson die Landschaft von Norfolk und Suffolk zu fotografieren. Mit diesen eindrucksvollen Aufnahmen erschienen Bücher und Mappen, durch die Emerson sehr bekannt wurde. Er komponierte seine Bilder in der Kamera, fertigte seine endgültigen Drucke ohne Studiorequisiten und bearbeitete seine Komposition nicht in der Dunkelkammer nach. Er entwickelte die Methode der Nutzung unterschiedlicher Bildschärfen wobei lebensnahe Bilder in der Anmutung des natürlichen Sehens entstanden.“ (Frölich & Kaufman, Berlin 2006).
Date 1886 appears on title page, but publication was delayed until 1887. Emerson’s negatives were printed by James Valentine & Sons. Proposed edition size: 100 deluxe/ 750 ordinary; realized: 25 deluxe at 10 L 10s. each, 175 ordinary at 6 L 6s. each.
Originally Emerson proposed 75 deluxe and 500 ordinary sets, realized 25/250. in some of the ordinary edition copies „Mending the Wherry“ has been substituted for „A way across the marches“. - As many of the plates began to show signs of wear, Emersondecided in 1889 to complete the advertised number by continuing the publication in potfolio form, using ten of the best plates.
