The print is the same image reproduced for the dust jacket. - Book beautifully printed on 200 gsm heavy fine paper by drukkerij Mart. Spruijy, from tritone separations made by Robert J. Hennessey. - From the publisher: "Danny Lyon has found his way to the great places on the plains and in the desert-the places where the glory lived: Heart Butte, Little Bighorn, Rosebud, White River, Gila River, San Carlos, Standing Rock, Lame Deer, Pine Ridge. He has photographed Sioux and Cheyenne, Apache, Tphono O'odham. In fidelity to, and in the context of their ancient places, his subjects preserve a hard-worn dignity. Clear your eyes and look." - Larry McMurtry. "Danny Lyon has again taken his camera to an America unknown to most of us, and by doing so he has again helped define who we are. Spending four years visiting the Sioux, Apache, and Western tribes, he has returned with haunting pictures of the plains and desert, and portraits that are both very real and romanitc. This is Danny Lyon's first major serial documentary since Conversations with the Dead."

Nur Kurztitelaufnahme 04.2004. - [Text at Schaden.com:] In 1968, just before Easy Rider roared its way into American consciousness, Danny Lyon published The Bikeriders. A seminal work of modern photojournalism, this landmark collection of photographs and interviews documents the abandon and risk implied in the name of the gang Lyon belonged to: the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club. With images and interviews that are as raw, alive, and dramatic today as they were three decades ago, this new edition includes startling new images: 15 additional black-and-white photographs and 14 color prints--long thought missing--of works originally published in black-and-white. With a new introduction by the author, The Bikeriders rides again, capturing like never before the dawn of the counterculture era.

Original edition published in 1997; limited edition released in 2001. This edition consists of 50 numbered copies, signed by Lyon, in a deluxe clamshell box, with an original 4 3/4 x 7 inch gelatin silver print, "Sparky and Cowboy (Gary Rogues), Schererville, Indiana," in a window-mat for presentation (print edition of 50 also numbered and signed by Lyon). - From the publisher: "In 1968, a small and unassuming book of photographs featuring America's bikers was published. Little note was taken of its release, and it rather quietly disappeared. Today The Bikeriders is recognized as a seminal work of documentary photography by one of a new generation of photographers. In it an iconographic American landscape of violence, freedom, drugs and sex unfolded before Danny Lyon's lens. Brando and Dean made real, at once exhilarating and disappointing, magnetic and frightening. The accompanying text includes an introduction by the artist, and some of the bikers' stories told in interviews and first-person accounts. This is a reissue of Danny Lyon's long-out-of-print, and much-sought-after first book, treasured both as a cult classic and a standard of photojournalism. Updated and printed in sheet-fed gravure, The Bikeriders is here presented for the first time as Danny Lyon had originally envisioned it."

Illustrated with Lyon's photo-montages and unpublished photographs from his previous projects. - From the publisher: "Knave of Hearts is a visual memoir in which Danny Lyon recounts his adventures as a photographer. It is illustrated with his color photo-montages and unpublished pictures from his three classic photodocumentary works, The Bikeriders, Conversations with the Dead, and The Destruction of Lower Manhattan. Most of the photographic plates are color reproductions of Lyon's photo-montages, hand-made, one of a kind works which were years in the making. All are published here for the first time. The autobiographical text tells his family's history beginning with the 1905 revolution in Russia, and covers the convolutions and unrest of 1960's America and the social radicalism of New Mexico in the 1970's, both of which he saw close up and first hand. Lyon's unlikely heroes include Hugh Edwards, perhaps the most influential curator of photography of his time, James Ray Renton, convicted cop killer and lifer, Muhammad Ali, who Lyon meets in Miami, and Willie Jaramillo, the star-crossed subject of a number of Lyon's subjects.“
