Text engl., lithuanian. - Dovydėnas is a native of Lithuania – the majority of his career he spent in the United States. After the soviet occupation of Lithuania he and his family was forced to emigrate first to Germany, and then to the United States. He studied photography at the Rhode Island school of design in Providence, and at the Dept. of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Since 1968 he has been working as a freelance photographer. - This is a catalog of a photo exhibition by Jonas Dovydenas in Vilnius in 2002. The images were made in the second decade of Lithuanian independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thus, today, they already show a country the way it was, a country that has moved on and changed. The author's stated goal was "...to maintain a truthful vision of my native land. My purpose is neither to condemn nor flatter - only to praise in my own way."

Text engl. - "Between 2008 and 2010, photographer Katy Grannan roamed the streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco, making portraits of strangers whom many of us might unattentively pass by; people whose faces, bodies, clothing and gestures comprise the subject of this magnificent oversize, slipcased monograph from Fraenkel Gallery and Salon 94. Grannan characterizes what attracts her in these subjects as "a combination of personality, spirit and their actual, physical being." Grannan photographed her subjects in front of the white stucco walls so readily found in California, preferring a strong midday light which transforms her city streets into outdoor studios. The light in these photographs is thus both precise and indiscriminate, describing in high-pitched detail Grannan's hustlers, dreamers, outcasts, addicts and beauty queens, and delivering a powerful atmosphere of both defiant optimism and great hardship. "I want all of it to exist, messily and awkwardly, in the photographs," she has said. Reviewing Fraenkel Gallery's 2011 exhibition of these 38 photographs for The Huffington Post, Julie Henson described them as "teeming with information about class, race, gender and community in the simplest terms." Text engl. - "Davidson, unlike other photographers before him, embedded himself in the world of his subjects for extended periods, he even joined a circus in 1958 in order to get the right pictures, the results of which formed themselves into series of powerful photo-essays. "Brooklyn Gang" and "East 100th Street" are perhaps his two most famous, and are the results of months and months living with both a gang of youths on Coney Island, and the inhabitants of a run-down tenement block in Harlem, New York. Through a combination of familiarity and his own visual poetry, Davidson brought these, and other subjects, to life in the many books and exhibitions that resulted from these projects. - Opening in May 2011, our exhibition will focus on several of these key photo-essays, namely, The Circus, Brooklyn Gang, Civil Rights Movement, East 100th Street, England/Scotland/Wales - 1960, and Central Park. - Davidson is mainly interested in documenting the struggles and triumphs of people as they go through their lives - the American Dream laid bare. His photographs are powerful, truthful, sometimes brutal, and often breathtaking.
