Text fr., engl. - The condition of women in India has long been regarded as one of the most difficult in the world. Yet, although few people are aware of it, India’s current president is a woman, Pratibha Patil. Her role may be mainly representative but she symbolizes an underlying trend: women are increasingly holding positions of responsibility in India. More and more women are climbing the ladder in Indian society, whether in politics, business, NGOs or the arts. They are participating actively in the country’s modernization. - To pay tribute to all the women who are now changing India, Reporters Without Borders decided to present the photos of six of the Magnum Photos agency’s leading photographers. Martine Franck, Patrick Zachmann, Raghu Rai, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Alex Webb and Olivia Arthur spent several weeks in India in order to capture the role women are playing in the upheavals that the country is currently undergoing. They all came back with amazing and powerful images showing the evolution of women in the world’s biggest democracy. Women changing India, 100 photos for the freedom of the press, produced with support from BNP Paribas, will be on sale on newsstands and in bookstores in France from 15 September 2011.“ (RSF press relaese).
