The book shows two portfolios, one by Gossage (a visual reflection on symbols of US power) and one from his collection. This second series is by German photographer and university professor Hermann Wilhelm Vogel who photographed for the Prussian expedition of the Strasbourg egyptologist Dümichen in Egypt in 1868. This was was published as Altaegyptische Denkmäler, and has been illustrated with original albumen prints. One image, e.g., shows a giant subterraenean Apis bull sacrophagus with members of the expedition team inside photographed by magnesium light. It was during this expedition that probably for the first time artificial light was used for archaeological documentation. (HCA).
