Other edition: Pb. reprint 2004. Pb. reprint published under the title: Motion studies: Time, space & [and] Eadweard Muybridge. London 2004. - The world as we know it today began in California in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This extraordinary assertion is at the heart of Rebecca Solnit's brilliant new work of cultural history. Weaving together biography, history, and fascinating insights into art, technology, landscape, and philosophy, Solnit has created a boldly original portrait of America on the threshold of modernity. During a period of feverish creativity that commenced in 1872, Eadweard Muybridge succeeded for the first time in capturing and reanimating high-speed motion on film - the crucial breakthrough that made movies possible. He also continued his series of breathtaking photographs of the monumental landscape of the American West, served as official photographer of the grueling war against the Modoc Indians, and, in a blaze of publicity, stood trial for the murder of his wife's lover. In Solnit's taut, compelling narrative, Muybridge's life becomes a lens for a larger story about the transformation of time and space in the nineteenth century. With dazzling erudition and a rare mastery of the interlocking histories of art, technology, politics, and commerce, Solnit shows how the peculiar freedoms and opportunities of post-Civil War California led directly to the two industries-Hollywood and Silicon Valley-that have most powerfully defined the contemporary world. River of Shadows is Solnit's most captivating book yet-wide- ranging in its allusions, daring in its connections, always surprising in its conclusions. Text engl. - Selected as one of the best photography books of 2000 by Andy Grundberg for the New York Times. Out-of-print. Scarce. - From the publisher: "The photographs in The Sky Book comprise Richard Misrach's most recent, most ambitious series, which transposes his narrative from the land to the sky. The images mediate between document and abstraction, reality and metaphor. Drawing on photography's documentary tradition, Misrach contextualizes each photograph with respect to time and place, rooting the celestial realm firmly in the earthly and political one."

Text engl. - Works by 37 artitsts. - Eden or Paradise, that place of great or perfect happiness and satisfaction, is an ideal that is still sought today. It resonates across time and cultures, charged with both political and environmental concerns. Picturing Eden offers a rare opportunity to view the work of contemporary photographers who examine the many facets of paradise, from a place of contemplation and restoration, to a site of loneliness and despair. Text engl. - The book offers a unique opportunity to trace the life and complex art of the 19th century photographer. This book places his entire body of work – both artistic and technical – in the context of one of the most transformative periods of American and European history. Published to accompany a retrospective exhibition organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, this catalogue authorsinvestigate a variety of new ways to understand and interpret Muybridge’s art and influences. Born in England, Muybridge (1830–1904) moved in his early twenties to the United States, where he was soon drawn to the dramatic Western landscape. After a stagecoach accident, during a long convalescence in England, he learned photography. Returning to San Francisco in 1867, he soon earned his reputation photographing both the landscape and urban development of the West. Muybridge is best known for this inventive work and his massive atlas of stop-action motion studies, Animal Locomotion, first published in 1887. (From publisher’s text).
