Text engl. - „Japan’s brilliant and influential postwar photographer Shomei Tomatsu (b. 1930) has created some of the most dramatic images in the history of photography. Many of his photographs have become icons of the twentieth century. This important book is the first in-depth English-language study of Tomatsu’s work. Richly illustrated and handsomely designed, it features more than one hundred plates representing in ten thematic sections the full range of his career. - Tomatsu emerged in the 1950s with his sensitive pictures of postwar Japan. In the 1960s the artist turned his camera to the aftermath of the atomic bomb and the lingering presence of the U. S. military in his homeland. In subsequent decades his lens has captured the elation of Japan’s economic boom and the problems inspired by his culture’s increasing westernization. Throughout, Tomatsu’s pictures have consistently resonated not only with Japanese society but also with American culture. Included in this book are essays by distinguished scholars on all aspects of the artist’s life and career as well as a selection of brief excerpts from Tomatsu’s own writings, many of which have never appeared in English. - Skin of the Nation (the book’s subtitle) is both a literal and metaphorical reference to the surfaces that have appeared in countless pictures throughout Tomatsu’s career. For the artist, skin is more than just a surface, it is a kind of map in which one can read the story of Japan, its essence and its future. Text engl. - Other edition: Berlin, Heidelberg: Kehrer 2011 - In 2001, Rinko Kawauchi launched her career with the simultaneous publication of three astonishing photobooks (Utatane, Hanabi and Hanako), firmly establishing herself as one of the most innovative newcomers to contemporary photography, not just in Japan, but across the globe. In the years that followed, she published other notable monographs, including Aila (2004), The Eyes, the Ear (2005) and Semear (2007). And now, ten years after her precipitous entry onto the international stage, Aperture has published Illuminance, the latest volume of Kawauchi's work and the first to be published outside of Japan. Kawauchi's photography has frequently been lauded for its nuanced palette and offhand compositional mastery, as well as its ability to incite wonder via careful attention to tiny gestures and the incidental details of her everyday environment. As Sean O'Hagan, writing in The Guardian in 2006, noted, "there is always some glimmer of hope and humanity, some sense of wonder at work in the rendering of the intimate and fragile." In Illuminance, Kawauchi continues her exploration of the extraordinary in the mundane, drawn to the fundamental cycles of life and the seemingly inadvertent, fractal-like organization of the natural world into formal patterns. Gorgeously produced as a clothbound volume with Japanese binding, this impressive compilation of previously unpublished images is proof of Kawauchi's unique sensibility and her ongoing appeal to lovers of photography.

Text engl. - At PhotoIreland Festival 2011 this title was selected by Martin Parr as one of the most important 30 photobook titles of the decade. Selected as one of the best photo books in 2010 by "Photoeye" by: Martin Parr ("The Tokyo underground, has for many years been a productive shooting place for photographers, especially showing the huge numbers squeezing onto the overcrowded trains. This close up take on this idea, together with a strong design makes a great book.").

(Watanabe).

Text engl. - The tremendous success of the Nikon reflex camera was based on the Nikon F, considered by many as the flagship photographic instrument in the long and colorful history of Nikon. Written in English by Uli Koch, this three volume set present the Nikon F system is presented in all its complexity in a level of detail never seen before. Countless high quality photographs show the various model variations of the camera, lenses and accessories throughout the more than 14-year production period. Numerous tables with serial number information and valuable data supplement this invaluable reference for collectors and users of this unique camera system. An artistically designed slip-case holds the three 28cm x 22cm sized volumes "The Camera," "The Lenses" and "The Accessories". A total of 610 fascinating pages and more than 820 photographs highlight detailed images of the most successful professional camera in the 1960s and early 1970s. Included are 210 exquisite color pictures in high-quality screen of this beautifully printed book. The first volume, The Camera, describes the numerous mechanical and cosmetic changes of the famous Nikon F body production run. Extensive information about little known models are discussed in the chapter "The Special Bodies." For the readers, this will be the first in-depth review of the little known chapter in Nikons history: The German NIKKOR story. The author describes in great detail both the competitive dispute with Zeiss Ikon during the 1960s and the legal ramifications. One of the reasons for the huge success of the Nikon F was the broad range of Nikkor lenses produced for the camera. This perfect and innovative production line is dedicated in the volume "The Lenses." Again many tables and photographs round out the high level of detail. The companys foresight in producing a myriad of high quality and innovative accessories was another part of the incredible triumph of the Nikon F system. The author covered these in great detail and knowledge in the final volume "The Accessories." Robert Rotoloni, a respected expert of historical Nikon equipment expressed in issue No. 72 of the NHS by stating: "This is one hell of a book" and "This is the most detailed, complete and best photographed ever done in English on the Nikon F system." He further states: "All of this info is complimented by superb photography! Everything is well photographed but not only are they well lighted and shot but they are innovative and interesting!"
