Text dt., engl. - The global dissemination of news photographs through the print media and television became a major artistic challenge particularly after 1960. Warhol’s introduction of mechanical reproduction means in his paintings based on press photographs is evidence of the radical change that took place in those years: the work of art moved in the direction of the mass image, it became anonymous and the artist's personal ‘signature’ disappeared. The fine art began explicitly to explore the special role of the press photograph in the 1960s and to become receptive to its forms and procedures. Today younger artists frequently incorporate methods of photojournalism in their own works. Press pictures cover reality in more ways than one: they both reveal and conceal it. Indeed, reality itself becomes an increasingly symbolic order under the dominion of these pictures, and political and military actions adapt to what the picture will convey. Press pictures do not only bear witness of reality, they also create it. The question of how we have to ‘read’ these images therefore becomes all the more poignant. This book is about reading pictures – art pictures and news pictures. By mutually confronting the two ‘genres’, they illuminate each other. Today the ‘public picture’ is a challenging forum for artists to redefine the aesthetic autonomy and social significance of their own work, within or beyond art./ - Unter dem Titel Covering the Real widmet das Kunstmuseum Basel der Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Pressebild erstmals eine grosse Ausstellung.
