Historische Photographien überliefern den anschaulichen Teil einer vergangenen Wirklichkeit. Jedes photographische Bild enthält Informationen, die nicht ohne detektivische Vorarbeit zu verstehen sind. Das Buch entwickelt eine Methode, die aus photographischen Dokumenten historische Quellen macht und zeigt, wie die in ihnen verborgenen Geschichten gelesen werden können. Im ersten Teil wird diese Methode des Bilder-Lesens in allgemeinen Zügen vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil setzt diese Methode am Beispiel einer etwa einhundert Bilder umfassenden Serie in die Praxis um. Die ausgewählten Photographien wurden um die Jahrhundertwende von Hermann Burchhardt gemacht und stammen alle aus Baalbek und Umgebung. In ihrer Gesamtheit bilden sie eine relativ einheitliche visuelle Überlieferung, die Stück für Stück zusammengesetzt wird. Das Interesse der meisten Besucher von Baalbek galt den weltberühmten Tempelruinen. Burchardts Bilder enthalten hingegen die an keiner anderen Stelle überlieferte Beschreibung der alltäglichen Geschichten von Baalbek um 1900, die mit Hilfe anderer, zeitgleicher Quellen lesbar gemacht werden.
