Streulis Fotografien von Straßenszenen in den Metropolen der Welt bieten Momentaufnahmen alltäglichen Lebens. Die Bilder werden zumeist von den Protagonisten unbemerkt aufgenommen und halten diese stets in Augenblicken fest, in denen sie in sich gekehrt und sich ihrer Wirkung nach außen nicht bewusst sind, selbst in Begleitung beziehungslos erscheinen. Von Streuli auf meterhohen Diapositiven oder in Endlosfilmschleifen an Ausstellungswände projiziert, entheben sie den Einzelnen aus seiner - relativen - Bedeutungslosigkeit, verwahren ihn in der musealen Ewigkeit. Immer wieder zieht es den Schweizer für seine Arbeit nach New York, wo ihm Bilder von besonderer Farbbrillanz gelingen, wenn Passanten vor den dunklen Schlagschatten der Wolkenkratzer und ins helle Sonnenlicht treten. Häufig bilden auch Teilstücke von Architekturen, Werbeaufschriften und Farbflächen vorbeifahrender Lastwagen fragmentierte Hintergründe für die Vorbeieilenden; ausschnitthafte Bildaufbauten, die in ihrer Ästhetik an die Malerei amerikanischer Fotorealisten erinnern. Eine Auswahl von Beat Streulis New-York-Arbeiten neueren Datums versammelt dieses in limitierter Auflage erscheinende und vom Künstler handsignierte Fotobuch.

Limited deluxe slipcased edition of 100 copies, hand-numbered and signed in black ink on the half-title page by Davidson, with an original gelatin silver print, image size 7 5/8 x 7 3/8 inches, paper size 10 x 8 inches (hand-numbered and signed in pencil on verso by Davidson, print edition 100). The print is housed in a separate cloth portfolio, in a beveled window overmatt for presentation (held in place within the portfolio by 4 ribbon corners. Text engl. - Seit März 1995 fotografiert Reiner Leist die tägliche Aussicht aus seinem Appartementfenster in der 8th Avenue in New York. Er blickte dabei auf bekannte Gebäude wie das One Penn Plaza, Madison Square Garden, das World Trade Center und das ehrwürdige New Yorker Hotel. Über 2000 Bilder sind dabei über 10 Jahre auf einer antiken Großformatkamera entstanden. Obwohl der Blickwinkel immer identisch ist, variieren seine Fotos durch die Betriebsamkeit auf der 8th Avenue, veränderte Wetterverhältnisse und Lichtstimmungen und natürlich den Fall des World Trade Centers. Das Buch zeigt ohne Ausnahme alle September-Bilder, die von 1995 bis 2005 entstanden sind und erscheint begleitend zu den Ausstellungen in Berlin und New York.

The author, an accomplished artist who has lived in America since 1977 and in New York since 1995, has spent years investigating the dark places of the city. The book is beautifully illustrated and features many of the author's own photos. Just as important, the stories she tells are fascinating - from the urban legends of alligators in the sewer systems to a late nineteenth century inventor trying to outwit Boss Tweed by building a downtown pneumatic subway system on the sly. As the story unfolds, she takes us through both abandoned train stations (where the fabled 'mole people' live) and the infrastructural ruins entombed in the bowels of the city.
