Text engl., pol. With separate 32 p. leaflet with essays. - A massive and heavy block; panorama photos without border/frame and text; mystically appearing images (on thick cardboard), which show vague scenes. In the object-like publication DARK ROOMS Konrad Pustoła examines Polish sex clubs. A colorful light reflection on a broken tile here, folds in a bed sheet and traces of erosion on the wall there. The party has just ended and the rooms have not yet been cleaned. Deserted, the somber photographs disperse a feeling of emptiness and loneliness. However, the guests remain present indirectly and give the images an esthetic and psychological dimension. The photographer is first and foremost interested in the visual quality of the rooms. Their architectural penuriousness and obscure impression evoke sacral spaces on one hand, and prison cells on the other. The suppression of sexuality in Pustoła’s Catholic home country certainly supports this observation. Pustoła leaves it to the viewer to perceive the setting as unromantic and cool or as free and open. The photographs act as a trigger for the power of imagination of the individual, who discovers his/her own future ideas or past experiences. Even though emotionally charged, the images allude to the examination of cultural stereotypes and the underground scene of Poland. - Konrad Pustola (1976), born in Varsaw, studied at the National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź after having completed his studies in economy at the University of Varsaw. He finished his studies at the Royal College of Art in London in 2008. He lives and works in Varsaw. (Press release).
