Text dt. - „Die Leidenschaft zum Buch in Fotografien aus den letzten 150 Jahren. »Bookish« wird gewöhnlich mit »gelehrt« oder auch »lesewütig« übersetzt. Als George Steiner 1988 in einem seiner Essays das »end of bookish times« postulierte, bezog er sich auf die Horizontlinien einer ganzen Epoche. »Bookish« beschreibt das Ergebnis einer Sozialisation, der spätestens seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts alle ausgesetzt sind, die lesen lernen. Die Massenkultur des Buches folgt der nahezu vollständigen Alphabetisierung der westeuropäischen Gesellschaften. Der Umgang mit Büchern hat seitdem das Verhalten von Menschen dort und anderswo nachhaltig geprägt. Heute, schon jenseits dieser »Buchzeiten«, scheint manches daran seltsam bizarr und unvertraut. Längst ist es selbstverständlich geworden, Wissen von Bildschirmen abzulesen. Wir haben neue und andere Haltungen sowie Gewohnheiten angenommen, um nach Informationen zu suchen. In Büchern blättern wir oft nur noch zum Vergnügen. Wir brauchen sie nicht mehr unbedingt. Auch deshalb ist es Zeit für einen Rückblick. Günter Karl Bose hat Fotografien aus den vergangenen 150 Jahren zusammengestellt, welche die zentrale Stellung des gedruckten Buches in Szene setzen: So werden zwei Geschichten verknüpft, die des Buches und die der Fotografie. Die ausgewählten 300 Aufnahmen aus den Jahren 1845 bis 1980 stammen aus der Sammlung des Autors und werden in den meisten Fällen erstmals publiziert. Sie fügen sich zu wechselnden Facetten eines Kaleidoskops, das zwanglos den Blick öffnet auf die »bookishness« der letzten beiden Jahrhunderte.
